Poor the Movie

Film

The Studio@620 will host a free film screening of POOR on Thursday October 7, 2021.  POOR follows 6 families and their day to day struggles in the American economic system. “Working families fight low wages, brutal landlords and a pandemic while big business CEOs, the super-rich and lobbyists weaponize a 40-year-old plan to destroy their American Dream.”

POOR the movie is a disruptive feature-length documentary from the award winning co-producer of award-winning Super Size Me and The Third Wave Dave Pederson and veteran director Sean Claffey. POOR puts faces and facts to the vast income & wealth inequality in America that is often leaving the poor largely homeless and steadily pushing the middle-class down and into poverty.

A discussion will be held after the screening. This is your chance to speak directly to the film’s creators! Plus enjoy a free beverage during the movie as a thank you for sharing your feedback.

Please RSVP in advance to attend. Guests are asked to wear masks while inside the building.

 Poor the Movie

Somehow over the last forty years those in the middle class have gone from living comfortable lives to just scraping by on salaries well below a living wage. While the prosperous America created by Roosevelt’s New Deal still appears in movies and television, the truth is much darker. Workers have become powerless, unions have been systematically dismantled, the average American household now has less than $400 for emergencies and a corporate plan was unleashed to make vulnerable middle class and “working poor” families believe that their struggles are of their own making.

The nostalgic idea that the American Dream is real and if you work incredibly hard you can never fail has been weaponized by the same people who set up a system designed to keep salaries low, slash employee benefits and spent millions to keep labor from organizing.

Only a camera can capture this state of affairs as the wreckage of this man-made disaster sweeps six families into a world of uncertainty, evictions and fear. Interviews with experts shed light on the carefully crafted plan which brought us here and what we must do to restore the American Dream.
