ROSHIN’S WAKE by Dorothy Hershman

Theatre

The Studio@620 is proud to present the world premiere of the gripping and spirited one-woman play, “ROSHIN’S WAKE,” written, directed and performed by award-winning actor, retired lower division Drama Specialist at Berkeley Preparatory School and Gulfport resident, Dorothy Hershman. Original music is performed by David Hershman, (Geri Hannah Eaton at Thursday’s performance only) and produced by Francine Wolf and ZaZu Productions, LLC.

Ms. Hershman describes the one hour play as a simple “journeying tale.” But, the journey this story is primarily concerned with is not the journey of Irish Immigrant Oognah Donohue, grandmother, crossing the western frontier in 1864, (though the particulars of that journey do shape the story), Rather it is the tale of one woman’s very human journey from tragedy, through grieving, to a celebration of life, shared with the audience in the role as her fellow travelers. Through that sharing then, Oognah Donohue arrives to find a source of strength in our human connectedness that just might get her all the way to Oregon, and beyond.

During Covid Lockdown Ms. Hershman began to delve into her fifteen years of research on the Oregon Trail and the resulting drama curriculum with the intention of publishing her work for educators. But somewhere along the way Oonagh began whispering in her ear.
