Scotty Wright sings Duke Ellington

Music

The Studio@620 welcomes the Scotty Wright Quintet on Saturday April 22, 2023 at 7:00 PM for a special performance of music from the era of Duke Ellington.

Edward Kennedy ‘Duke’ Ellington (1899-1974) was a bandleader, composer and arranger. He developed a vocabulary of sounds and textures and rhythms that defined jazz music. The signature sound of his orchestra, combined with the songs created by the Duke and his band members, became an essential example of what jazz sounded and felt like.

The Scotty Wright Quintet has prepared a program of vintage Ellingtonia. It features songs written by the Duke, and others written by his colleagues: Juan Tizol, Johnny Hodges and Ellington’s main partner, Billy Strayhorn.

The Scotty Wright Quintet is:
Scotty Wright -voice, Pablo Arencibia – piano, David Pate – saxophone, Mark Neuenschwander – bass, Stephen Bucholtz – drums

“There are simply two kinds of music, good music and the other kind … the only yardstick by which the result should be judged is simply that of how it sounds. If it sounds good it’s successful; if it doesn’t it has failed.”
“By and large, jazz has always been like the kind of a man you wouldn’t want your daughter to associate with.”
Duke Ellington, 1962
